Default DFDS to take over from LD Lines in Portsmouth

Gossip on the cat this morning with Wightlink crew.

LD Lines are to pull out of Portsmouth with DFDS taking over. They will continue and improve the Le Havre route, but also plan to muscle in on the lucrative Spanish routes.

Anyone else heard this? Wonder what ships they will use?

Mmm, a class competitor. Just what is needed on the Western Channel crossings. If they bring the Val back to Pompey, they've got me jumping ship.

I was already on the fence of being an LD convert after a great trip with them recently.
DFDS taking over will be great for the route, and imagine bf's reaction if they brought the Val down, especially for a spain route.

DFDS website has a press release from March that DFDS and LD lines had agreed to merge on routes operating on the channel and a route between France and Tunisia.
The merge was expected to be completed in July 2012 with DFDS owning 82% and LD 18%.

The 'Joint Venture' between LD and DFDS was completed on the 26th September.

Full details can be found here.

Of note is:
Quote:
The planned integration process has now been kicked off and is expected to be completed by the end of 2013, including integration of all business systems.

The integration is expected to enhance operational efficiency as LD Lines’ operations are transferred to DFDS’ business systems and groupwide functional services (it, finance, HR, technical).

I wonder if DFDS have smelled blood in Portsmouth. They have deep pockets and could very well give BF a real run for their money. They would certainly continue the `no frills` type of service, with lower fares and maybe a Cherbourg service as well as Le Havre...

Surely suitable tonnage is still a major issue for LD/DFDS?

Doesnt DFDS have several ships laid up at the moment they could bring into service?

Or buy/charter some possible surplus BF tonnage?

Money talks though and DFDS have a lot of it. There are several good ships laid up around Europe - the Stena Baltica is a prime example, although her interior is a bit wipe-clean and sterile.

There are a number of shipping lines that would be more than willing to sell/charter out some ships - Moby Lines recently chartered one of their flagships to Eckero Line to alleviate their over-capacity and TallinkSilja were reported to be in a heap of debt, they may be willing to charter out a cruise ferry to help maintain the debt - would certainly put the Pont-Aven in her place...
