Medmar closes Balearic link

DAILY SHIPPING NEWSLETTER 2004 - 087

ITALIAN ferry operator Medmar has terminated its ferry service between the port of Saete in southern France and Palma de Majorca in the Balearic Islands. The last sailing of the 1972-built Italian flagged, 1,050-passenger ferry Donatella D'Abundo took place at the weekend. It is not clear why the service was stopped just as the summer season was about to get underway, but local sources said bookings for the peak months of July and August might have been disappointing.

The company is believed to have received numerous complaints from passengers regarding the facilities at Sete. The terminal at which the Medmar ferry called collapsed a few months ago, forcing the port authority to send the vessel to another quay close to facilities receiving cattle carriers. Medmar's local agent warned that this situation could not last longer. Medmar launched its Sete-Palma service in March 2003 and carried 45,000 passengers in its first year of operation, which was in line with its target.

The termination of this link follows the closure, in 2000, of another service between Saete and Palma, launched by French operator Societe Maritime.

Oh, that is very surprising, I mean it´s summer and there should be some traffic. We can see and wait, whether they have stopped it just for a short-term or if they put the ex. Qui for sale.
