Red Funnel on the move

A GIANT scheme costing £325 million, which could see Red Funnel’s Southampton terminal moved from its current location, has been unveiled by developers.
The project has been put forward by Scottish developers Kilmartin who would either move the terminal to the end of Mayflower Park next to berth 101 or to the Town Quay marina.
The scheme would create much needed space for the ferry company and would dramatically increase the size of the Royal Pier district.
Under the proposals, the derelict Southampton pier would be knocked down and in its place a new promenade built which would stretch from Mayflower park across the water to Town Quay.
It is unclear how the scheme would be paid for but it is understood Red Funnel would not be expected to pay for the move.
Sale and lease of space for offices and shops could create income but other development would be needed to cover the shortfall, possibly with the construction of a giant casino or an indoor arena.
