End of era as P&O axes ferries

FERRY giant P&O has axed all Portsmouth's routes to France in a cost-cutting exercise that will see hundreds of jobs lost in the city.

The company announced that three of its four Western Channel routes – those that leave from Portsmouth – were to go.

More than 200 people will lose their jobs and another 350 could be transferred to Brittany Ferries.

The only route that the company will keep will be Portsmouth to Bilbao, Spain.

The cuts will happen at the start of the new year once talks with the unions had been completed, but the company will not be pulling out of the city.

P&O goes closed the line Cherbourg - Portsmouth (P&O Ferries) and the line Cherbourg - Rosslare (P&O Irish Sea).

Nope Cherbourg goes! No point in BF carrying it on either, and the News confirmed today with a map that BF are doing Cherbourg next year

The Times reported that even the Portsmouth Bilbao service is to be reduced, and that BF are definitely taking over some P&O vessels
